A panic attack is an unexpected, brief period of extreme anxiety. They can occur without warning and with no obvious cause. It is for this reason that many people who suffer from panic attacks considered them to be extremely frightening and upsetting.

Symptoms of panic attack are numerous but include:

- Sweating

- Rapid breathing

- Increased heart rate

- Frightening thoughts

- Extreme worried feeling

- Feeling of impending doom

- An unreal feeling

- Heightened senses

- Perceived slowing down or speeding up of time

Most panic attack symptoms last for around ten minutes. That can however, last as little 5 minutes. Typically, other psychological disorders are present with panic attacks.

Panic attacks are the result of the "fight or flight" response which involves flooding the body with adrenaline in anticipation of needing to run from danger or fight for your life. With panic attacks however, this "fight or flight" response occurs out of context.

Causes of Panic Attack

There are two categories of panic attack causes. The first is psychological, which includes a lack of assertiveness, phobias, a cautious view on the world and a significant life change. The second is pharmacological, with long-term use of drugs such as speed and marijuana becoming a major cause of panic attacks.

Panic attack can also occur in conjunction with other psychological illness and are typically a symptom of the underlying condition. Such psychological conditions include obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress and generalized anxiety.

Panic Attack Remedies

One of the more successful treatments of panic attack is a combination of psychological and pharmacological remedies. That is, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) - a psychological techniques - and anti-anxiety drugs.

Today, there are also many products on the market created by former sufferers of panic attacks. These products allow people having panic attacks to undergo a home study course to help treat their condition. The authors of these products have typically overcome their own panic attacks without drugs.
