When an individual has been diagnosed with having suffered a panic attack and it is not a symptom of a possibly more concerning condition, you need to start thinking about two things: behavior-cognitive therapy and prescription drugs.

Individual will learn much about negative thinking and how to replace those thoughts with positive ones. She/he will also learn to master breathing techniques that helps to stop panic attacks from happening with therapy.

The problem with this might be that it takes some time to master these techniques and in the mean time you might suffer from more panic attacks before you'll learn how to stop them happening. This is where the right medication might be helpful.

While you are taking the drugs for panic attacks it could be wise to get involved in various stress relieving activities like yoga, meditation, tai chi, individual sports or you can also sign up for the anger management classes. Basically anything helps which trains you to deal with worries and anxiety.

You also need to understand that the medication for panic attacks has to be prescribed by a doctor. Usually these are drugs like Prozac, Paxil or Zoloft. These are known as SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors)

They are helpful as they aid the patient in gaining control over the panic attack and there are many cases in which individuals can learn how to fight different triggers while on such medication. Such a success can lead to the panic attack cycle disappearing and you might end up having to stop medication because you are free of panic attacks and have learnt how to deal with them.

The doctor can also prescribe more serious drugs when the individual is learning on how to cope with panic attacks and limited use of Valium or Xanax (two usual benzodiazepines) could be needed.

It is vitally important to understand that these or any kind of drugs must not be abused as they can quickly become addictive and one should only take them in cases of emergency and not for long periods of time.

The real problem stands in the fact that many individuals tend to use illegal drugs or alcohol as means of dealing with panic attacks. This can only lead to dependency to those medications and alcohol and would bring another problem that needs to be treated. Why go through all of this trouble when by combining the right medication prescribed by a specialist and relaxation techniques you can get results and deal with panic attacks?
