Baguazhang to increase a person’s energy level

Baguazhang, a Chinese martial art form, can increase a person’s energy level greatly. It involves circle walking, practice forms and control of breathing, benefiting anyone of any age. Qi, or internal energy, is used for health and combat in this martial part.

Baguazhang means Eight Trigram Palm and is one of the three Nei Jia Quan internal styles of martial art from China. Palm techniques are am important part of this art. The movements of Baguazhang utilize the Taoist Ba Gua symbol for walking in a circle. This is used to confuse and exhaust the opponent and gather Qi from all directions. All the movements of this art are smooth and the body is used as a whole. There is no focus on sheer muscle power from one part of the body, but instead the power originates from the Dantian, or lowers abdomen just below the navel.

Baguazhang was taught to Imperial Guards in Beijing who were assigned the protection of important officials. Small, easy to conceal weapons were placed in the large, flowing sleeves of their formal robes. Deer horn knives, daggers, the iron fam and even steel yo-yos were employed as weapons. Larger weapons include the broadsword, spears and wind and fire wheels. The staff and straight swords are included in this martial art as well.

One of the moves of Baguazhang is the Turning the Millstone Palm movement. The lead palm extends our from the body, facing the opposition. The index finger and thumb form the letter “L” and the rear palm is held close to the body. The hand motion looks like a person grinding an invisible object with their lead hand. During this movement, the person walks the invisible circle using eight steps on each revolution.

Other Baguazhang movements include Covering Millstone Palm, an overhead strike; Single Palm Change, Double Palm Change, Penetrating Palm, Sliding Palm, and Splitting Palm.
