When you decide to practice a martial art, you will discover that there are certain types of equipment that you may require in order to practice your martial art at home. You may also be required to purchase certain martial arts equipment in order to compete.

Although, your martial arts club will usually have all the equipment you need for your lessons and may lend you equipment for other purposes, it is always valuable to own your own equipment.

Every martial art will have its own unique equipment to accompany lessons. These customary pieces of equipment will have significance to the history and practice of the martial art that they belong to.

Initially, you will be required to purchase a uniform. Your martial arts uniform will depict the style of martial art that you practice. A Martial Arts uniform will usually consist of loose pants and a loose top with a belt, which holds the top and pants in place.

Your martial arts uniform will usually require a patch, which symbolizes your martial art and its origins. Just as you patch symbolizes your martial art’s origins, your martial arts belt symbolizes the level of learning that you have reached.

Everything in Martial Arts has meaning and symbolism and every piece of equipment has significance and a special purpose in the particular martial arts that you are learning. Therefore, it is important that you have the right equipment and do not mix your types of equipment.

There are some basic equipment types that you can have for all styles of martial arts, which includes, certain protective gear. Protective shin guards, or protective arm guards are valuable types of equipment to own, during training and competition.

Also, having a good pair of martial arts shoes is important for protecting your feet, which form part of an important tool that you use in martial arts. So, these are protective equipment for martial arts, however, there are also protective weapons which one needs to complete martial arts training.

In competitive training, you may be required to use wooden sticks, nunchukus, or boxing gloves. During Martial Arts training, or competition, you will not find martial arts students using sharp instruments. So, samurai swords and ninja stars are considered dangerous implements and in some cases are considered illegal weapons.

Martial arts training and competition also utilizes a range of sparing equipment, such as mats and boxing equipment. You will not be expected to obtain all these different types of equipment at the beginning of your martial arts training, as you can see, some equipment is essential, some is already supplied and available to your for free and other types of equipment are there as a personal choice.

When you first begin your martial arts training, start by obtaining the required uniform and possibly some protective gear. After this, when you begin to compete in your martial arts area, you can consider acquiring the equipment required for competition purposes, although this may be available to you at the discretion of your own martial arts club.
