For thousands of years, physicians have been attempting to develop safe cosmetic surgical procedures. The ancient Romans, Egyptians, and Indians were the first to attempt it, but not particularly to make people more attractive, the reason modern patients usually seek out plastic surgeons. Up until the last century, cosmetic surgery sought almost exclusively to repair damage from birth defects or battle. They experimented with ways to fix ear and nose damage, especially by skin graft. In 700 BC, Sushruta Samhita, an Indian doctor, wrote about the instruments he used and various procedures, among them rhinoplasty. Around the first century BC, skin grafts were used to smooth out burned or scarred flesh.

In 1400 AD, Gustav and Antonio Branke, a Sicilian father and son surgical pair, described the nose surgeries they performed, laying down instructional guidelines for other physicians. Not a lot more went on in the field, however, until the 19th century. Europeans worked to improve skin graft techniques, and later, in 1827, an American physician, John Peter Mettauer did the first procedure to repair a cleft palate.
The horrible disfigurements wrought by World War I stepped up the need for improved reconstructive surgery. Shattered faces and damaged features kept surgeons performing reconstructive surgeries for a long time afterwards.
Finally, late in that century, men and women began requesting cosmetic surgery for reasons that were wholly aesthetic. It was usually not talked about, and was not a wide spread thing. However, between 1997 and 2002, the number of cosmetic surgical procedures jumped over 200% in those five years! Suddenly, the number of surgeons and possible procedures skyrocketed to meet an unprecedented demand.
Today, Chicago cosmetic surgery offers a whole array of services: chemical peels, rhinoplasty, liposuction, mesotherapy, scar removal, abdominoplasty, and more. If you do not like something about your appearance, there is probably a way to fix it! World known physicians in Chicago take patients from all over the world, and they are recognized as being among the top echelons in their field. Developing improved techniques, inventing more efficient instruments, teaching procedures to colleagues, and studying plastic surgery around the globe, there are no finer physicians with whom to entrust your looks!
