The wedding ring represents the enduring constancy of marriage. Rings are exchanged in wedding rites all over the world in both religious and civil ceremonies. While other materials have been used for wedding rings including ivory, leather, bone and glass, rings made of precious metals are the most commonly seen. The purchasing of the wedding rings is an essential item on the list for the big event. Finding the right rings can be a pleasurable task but somewhat overwhelming since so many styles are available from which to choose.
Most wedding planners recommend that ring shopping should be undertaken after some of the more logistical parts of planning the event have been completed. This allows the hunt to be less a stressful chore and more of an enjoyable pastime. Selecting the rings is an excellent time to relax and regroup before the tension builds as the big event approaches.
Wedding rings are meant to last a lifetime, so they should be chosen with care. Decide on a budget in advance so you can narrow down your choices. Once you start searching, you will be overwhelmed by the great variety of styles available. Without a budget to narrow your focus, decision making could be overwhelming. Look for rings that not only appeal to you but are comfortable to wear every day.
The latest and trendiest styles will be the focus in the displays at the Jewelers, but don't neglect the more traditional styles. Since a wedding ring is going to be worn for a long time, the final choice should be a style that can travel through the years. As many men wear their ring as their only jewelry item, it is important that the final decision be made jointly.
There are several important questions to consider. What type of metal or metals such as white gold, yellow gold or platinum are preferred? Should the bands include gemstones? Is a plain or more ornate style preferred? Are there any cultural preferences? Is an engraved inscription to be added to the rings? Should the rings match or should they be an individual choice that suits each wearer?
A plain gold band, narrower for the bride and wider for the groom is a classic look. Do either of you have any cultural preferences? For example, traditional French rings are made up of of three interwoven rings which stand for "faith", "hope" and "love". In Greek and Anatolian cultures women wear "puzzle rings" which consist of intricate interlocking bands that are assembled to create a single ring. A traditional Russian rings are made of bands of three metals: bands of rose, white and yellow gold. Jewish wedding rings are usually inscribed with a Hebrew scripture. The popular Irish Claddagh rings symbolize the phrase "let love and friendship reign." They are adorned with two hands clasping a heart surmounted by a crown.
After finally finding the perfect rings, you should decide whether to add an inscription. Engraving makes your rings truly unique and special, and there is often more room than you would think to add your inscription. Once you have made all the decisions, go over your receipt carefully before making a payment. Don't forget to ask the jeweler about care and upkeep. You may also want to consider insurance. Before long you will each be wearing the rings you selected together as the outward symbol of your commitment to each other!
