Much can be learned about people from their marriage records. The problem with free marriage records from government sources is that they are segregated at state level. That means marriage records documented in one state will not show up if the search is conducted in another. In order to be 100% sure not to have escapees, one would have to go through all the individual state repositories one by one. Fortunately, much of this work can be done electronically these days.
There are both Confidential and Public Marriage Records. The bulk of marriage records fall under the latter category and the information found in these free marriage records typically include personal particulars of the couple, their parents', witnesses' and also the name of the conducting official of the marriage ceremony.
