The world today has been really advanced. There are many technologies and information available. However, despite the advancement and high technology, there are still many traditional beliefs about diabetes. These beliefs vary from plain and simple to really intolerable blunders.

Diabetes is Contagious: Diabetes is not contagious like a catching cold or the flu. Diabetes develops when a person's body does not produce enough insulin, or cannot utilize the insulin that is produced.

All Diabetics Require Insulin Shots: Type 1 diabetics usually do have to get injections of insulin because their body does not produce its own any longer. Type 2 diabetics only require injections if they have failed to follow the advice of their health care provider and eat healthier as well as exercise.

Blood is the only one affected by Diabetes: All parts of the body may be affected if not given early treatment. Moreover, if treatments are not applied and followed, complications and other risk factors may develop. Some of the risk factors associated with this disease are stroke, nerve damages, cardio vascular diseases, eye sight problems, kidney malfunction and blood diseases.

Eating too much sweet foods may contribute to the development of diabetes: Sweet foods do not cause diabetes; it may only aggravate the condition most especially to those who have been diagnosed with one.

Insulin is the Cause of Atherosclerosis and High Blood Pressure: Reports show that insulin may aggravate the condition but is not the cause of it.

Fruit is Healthy and can be Eaten in any Quantity: Fruits contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals which are healthy for a person. Fruit also contains carbohydrates which convert almost instantly into sugar, so fruit should be eaten in moderation.

Diabetics are not allowed to eat foods rich in Carbohydrates: As opposed to what many people believe that foods rich in carbohydrates such as potatoes, bread and pasta are bad for diabetic patients, these foods are actually good. It only boils down to taking things moderately.

Diabetics Can Not Eat Chocolate: As long as moderation is used along with a healthy diet and exercise plan, chocolate is no longer considered taboo.

Diabetics should stick to a Special meal exclusively for Diabetics: The reason why Diabetic diet is made is because diabetic patients find it hard to follow healthy diet. However, if you are a patient who can easily follow healthy diet, then there is no need for you to stick with special diabetic meal. Moreover, special diabetic meals can be very expensive especially to those who are not well-off.

Insulin Contributes to Weight Gain: Following a healthy diet and exercise counter-balance the possibility of weight gain due to Insulin. It is far safer for a diabetic to receive Insulin, than it is for them not to.

Type 2 Diabetes Only Afflicts Adults: With the reduction in school activities such as sports and physical education, and the ever increasing number of computer and video games, the children of today are not getting the exercise that they need to stay at a healthy weight. Not to mention the fact that the average parent of today does not usually have the time to make a healthy meal for their family. So a quick stop at a fast food facility provides a meal that is high in saturated and trans-fats, carbohydrates and calories; containing very little if any nutritional value at all. This sedentary, fast food filled lifestyle is causing our children to become overweight and placing them at higher risks than ever before of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Other Diseases are more likely to develop on Diabetic Patients: Diabetic patients are required to get anti-infection shots because infections may cause high blood sugar level and this condition is not good for diabetic patients.

The list of myths about diabetes is very long and the only way to end this list is to be aware of the facts that are associated with diabetes. Moreover, having the correct knowledge and information will help the patient acquire treatments and recover from this disease.
