It is not so tough to slim down; the hardest part is actually maintaining the weight loss long term, that's what many dieters seem to forget about! You must plan to modify your eating habits for life, not just a few months! If you change a number of of your bad habits now you will have a much better shot at both losing the weight and keeping it off! - 1 - If you are eating out, try to select salads, vegetables and white meats (as long as they are not covered with batter, crumbs or have been fried.) If there is a sauce with the meal as the waiter if you can have it on the side or in a separate dish, then use your fork to apply sparingly as the amount of calories in some of these sauces would make you cry! - 2 - Aim to exercise for45- 60 minutes at least 4 times per week. One way I found to help pick up the pace is to walk like you are running late for a very important meeting. Try to find a friend to walk with and encourage each other to keep going. - 3 - Ensure that your friends and family know that you are trying to change your eating habits and ask that they respect this and don't try to tempt you - you know what I mean "Go one, just have one, it won't matter!". This doesn't help you at all, and you should try to avoid these people if at all possible during this time. - 4 - It is important that you eat breakfast every morning, this is the most important meal of the day, it helps to get your metabolism burning. It will also help you avoid the mid morning snack attack! - 5 - Limit your alcohol intake; most drinks are very high in calories, especially considering you normally mix them with even more calories i.e. the soft drink mixers. - 6 - Make an effort to get hold of some low fat, low calorie recipes. If you can't afford to buy some new recipe books or magazines then either look online (you will find lots of great sites) or try your local library. - 7 - Make sure you have some low fat frozen meals in stock for the days when you just don't feel like cooking. When shopping for these try to stick to meals with under 10 grams of fat (for the total meal) but also make sure you check out the sodium content, if it contains more than 800-900 give it a miss as high sodium diet is very bad for your health. - 8 - Serve your meal on a smaller plate, this makes you feel that you are not being deprived and always sit down to a meal. If eat on the run you can easily 'forget' that you have already eaten the previous meal and be tempted to eat more. - 9 - Stop drinking soda pop as it is packed with sugar. Don't switch to diet drinks as there is a lot of evidence that the chemicals used to sweeten the drinks are extremely dangerous just drink water instead, if you don't like it plain add a squeeze of either lemon or lime, this makes it very refreshing. - 10 - Take your lunch with you to work or school as often as possible (at least twice a week); this will help you to avoid situations where it could be easy to break your diet as there are no healthy choices at the local diner.

Most importantly remember that if you slip up and overindulge don't give in, just continue on with this healthier eating plan!
