It seems that every time we pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV we hear reports of how obesity is turning out to be one of the greatest problems to face the western world. Carrying too much extra weight inevitably places an extra strain on our health and so many different ways whether it be from an increased risk of diabetes or a raising of blood pressure.

People like you and me have for years searched the drugstore shelves for that magic pill that will help us lose weight, reduce our appetite and provide a much needed energy boost. Products such as Carb blockers and Hoodia receive massive advertising exposure with the promise of a quick fix for our weight problems.

Metabolism is an important part of losing weight and controlling hunger, and calorie burning. Vitamins may be the answer for those who are not interested in taking over-the-counter pills. Over-the-counter creations could cause an increased heart rate, skittishness, and sleeplessness. Your body can become used to the drugs and adapt to them. Sometimes the pills lose their effectiveness and there is no clear proof that they will not damage your heart.

The proper vitamins can aid weight loss and control. Our body will work better when we are healthy and being sure we are getting the proper nutrients plays a huge part of our health. It is hard to pick out the "perfect" vitamins to use for weight control or weight loss. There are a few that are worth mentioning because of their use in controlling appetite, metabolism of fats and sugar, and calorie burning.

Vitamin B and Vitamin C are two of the most important vitamins you should be taking for controlling weight apart from their part in contributing to general good health.

Vitamin B2, which is the riboflavin vitamin, is essential for normal thyroid function and metabolism. You will find riboflavin in almond, hard cheese, eggs, milk products leafy green vegetables, and organ meats such as liver and kidney.

Niacin, which is the B3 vitamin, is also important for thyroid function. It is also important for controlling the glucose toleration. Every time blood sugar rises we need vitamin B3. Foods that are sources for this vitamin are tuna, turkey, chicken, meat, eggs, some fish, dried fruit and brown rice. Oats and wheat flakes are also good sources of niacin.

Vitamin B5 is another of the B vitamins that helps the body control the use of fat. It also helps the adrenal gland and has positive benefits in raising energy levels. Good sources of vitamin B5 are barley, oats, green vegetables, eggs, molasses, beans, wheat flakes, wheat bran and wheat germ.

Important for the control of the thyroid function and metabolism is vitamin B6 which includes Chloline and Inisitol. Choline is also needed by the body for the metabolism of fat. You can find vitamin B6 in dried fruits, eggs, fish, beef and poultry while Choline is contained in peanuts, wheat germ, egg yolks and beef organs. Citrus fruits, whole grains, eggs and nuts all contain Inositol.

Vitamin C, perhaps the best known vitamin provides us with many benefits, not all related to weight control, however one important job it does in helping us keep our weight in check is to turn the glucose in our body into energy. Vitamin C is found naturally in many fruits such as oranges, lemons, blackcurrents, strawberries and also in green vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts.

So, in summary, if you eat a diet rich in the 5 vitamins I have covered, B2, B3, B5, B6 and vitamin C, you will be going a long way to providing your body with the right foods to help keep your weight under control.

Eating a healthy balanced diet is always going to be the best way of getting these important weight controlling vitamins into your body. Our busy lifesyles these days means that this is not always possible and this is where a good quality vitamin supplement can help, although under no circumstances should you just rely on supplements to provide you with your nutritional needs.
