Most books on nutrition assume everybody is the same. But it ain't so. We're all different. Yet we are told to avoid fat and eat fruits and vegetables as if there's no difference between us.

Whatever the problem, fat gets the blame. Heart attacks. Cancer. Obesity. Soaring petrol prices. It doesn't seem to matter. All would be well if only we switched to healthy vegetables, fruits and grains instead.

Fat Is Good

There's a medically approved diet for certain children. Fat makes up 90% of the calories of this diet. I kid you not. And yet these children grow normally, are of normal weight and their cholesterol levels are only slightly higher than usual. What these children have is epilepsy. Their seizures are controlled by this diet.

A typical breakfast might be mushroom omelette with bacon and a cup of hot chocolate made with 36 per cent cream. This may not appeal to you, but for the children and their families it's just what they need.

You're still not convinced are you? You think that's a special case. Surely we can make the general statement: fat is bad; fruits and vegetables are good?

No, it's not as simple as that. The number one dietary deficiency, according to some nutritionists, is.....fat.

Saturated fat from meat and dairy is not the enemy it's often portrayed as. It may not be particularly desirable, but our bodies are well adapted to eating it. The real problem is that we're eating far too much of the omega 6 and trans fats from vegetable oils and far too little omega 3 from oily fish.

Avoid Those Vegetables

Glasgow University professor Kenneth McColl has given a warning that vegetable consumption could be behind the UK's fastest growing cancer. He and his 10-strong research team believe that the three fold increase in throat cancers over the last 20 years could be down to nitrate fertilisers.

Buying organic is not the answer. They are also loaded with nitrate.

I could mention all the naturally occurring toxins, carcinogens and mutagens found in fruits and vegetables. But I won't. At least not for this article.

I could even mention those that are especially sensitive to carbohydrates. They must limit their intake of vegetables and fruits because they cause their blood sugar levels to swing wildly. But we'll leave that alone.

I might even mention the many people who have a toxic reaction to certain foods. Even 'healthy' foods, like grapefruit, oranges, tomatoes, onions.

And there are those that are allergic to aspirin. The chemical salicylate which is found in aspirin is also found in high amounts in fruits and vegetables.

Of course I'm not really telling you to eat fat and avoid fruits and vegetables. The point I am making is that you are an individual, with your own personal requirements. You are different from every other person on earth. So nobody can tell you what to eat. You must get to know your own body and understand what it is trying to tell you.

Listen to your body, not to nutrition 'experts'.
