One mistake that many people make when buying dogs is that they go through a pet store. When getting a puppy from a pet store you are not going to have all the facts about where that puppy came from or the living conditions it lived in. Your local pet store generally has rules about not releasing pet breeders information so you end up with a puppy but no history on where it came from. Also, it is less likely that you will leave well informed about your new Havanese puppy versus the kind of information you could receive directly from a good Havanese breeder.

Pet store employees also do not have the extensive knowledge and training that a Havanese breeder would have. These are simply hourly employees who are trying to sell you a dog and if you are lucky, they might be able to point out a couple of things they remember hearing about the dog. This does not give you a good sense of what you are getting into. You must know everything there is to know about Havanese puppies and Havanese breeders as possible in order to make an educated decision.
A knowledgeable Havanese breeder should have not only a passion for their furry friends but also a lot of experience in breeding not just any dog, but the Havanese in particular. It is vital that you do not go with a breeder that cannot give you a lot of Havanese information.
Now that you know the reasons why to stay away from pet stores when searching for your new puppy, you now need to take steps to find the right breeder. Just because they are a breeder does not mean you want to go with them. This is an investment of not only about twenty years with your dog but of a lot of money as well. Your Havanese breeder should have a lot of information to provide you with and be willing to take as much time as needed for you to fully understand the Havanese.
Your Havanese breeder should allow you to look around the puppy's environment so you can have a better feel of where the puppy comes from and in a pet store you will not have the chance to do that. They also should not be pushy in terms of getting you to purchase a puppy. Good breeders actually try to get a feel of the potential buyer as they care enough for the puppies to make sure they go to a good home. Get a feel for your Havanese breeder and go with your gut.
All in all, when it comes time to start looking for your new Havanese puppy, make sure that you are first selecting the right place to shop and look around. If something doesn't feel right, then it probably isn't. Educate yourself as much as possible before going and have that list of questions ready to ask. A Havanese breeder should have no problem in answering your questions as a pet store employee would.
You want to avoid costly vet bills that arise because you were not properly informed of the Havanese and their special needs, if any, or because they came from a puppy mill and were poorly treated in the beginning. Make sure you take a list with you and do not allow yourself to feel pressure from a breeder.
If you get a weird feeling from the breeder or the home environment of the puppies you need to go somewhere else. This is a decision to make wisely and one to be made with a breeder, not with an hourly pet store employee.
