Bringing a new Pug into your home can be an exciting time and learning how to give the best care for pug puppies will ensure your new Pug gets a good start in life.
In his first year, your Pug needs particularly good nutrition, to ensure proper brain development and physical health. He depends on you to feed him good, nutritious food, which will prepare him for a long, healthy life.
So how do you choose a nutritious dog food?
Be sure to read the dog food label to make sure it's loaded with nutritious ingredients. The first ingredient listed should be protein -- chicken, lamb, or beef meal. Don't start feeding your pug table scraps, and help him live a long and healthy life by not overfeeding him.
Don't forget to stock up on all the necessary supplies for your Pug puppy. He'll need food and water bowls, a sturdy harness, a leash, and a cozy bed of his own. And for doggy playtime, don't forget his toys!
Food and water bowls for your pug should be wide but shallow. Dishes that are too narrow or deep can cause your puppy to get food or drink in his eyes, and cause eye infections.
Plan ahead when choosing a crate and dog bed for your Pug. That puppy may be tiny now, but eventually he's going to grow, and he'll need a bed that will also fit him when he's full-sized. One solution is to get a crate that comes with a partition. This will allow you to create a cozy bed for your Pug puppy, and then take out the partition when he's larger.
It is a good idea to use a harness on your Pug instead of a dog collar. A harness fits around the dog's body, as opposed to collars that are attached around the dog's neck. Pulling on a collar can constrict the windpipe and this can lead to choking. To avoid damage to your Pug's windpipe or any other potential problems, the best choice is a harness.
It's not difficult to provide good care for Pug puppies. Most of it is just common sense. Feed your puppy nutritious food in appropriate quantities and make sure he gets his regular check-ups and shots. Your vet can guide you in this area. These few things plus your time and affection will help ensure that your puppy has a long, healthy and happy life.
