If you want a creative way to help improve your childs behavior, then you might want to consider getting them a dog. It sounds kind of sounds strange, but it can be a very rewarding way to teach your child some very much needed skills.

Children need a creative outlet in order to grow intellectually. Sometimes their bad behavior is the result of not being able to expend their creative energy. In this way, getting them a dog might be just what they need. This is especially true if they get a new puppy. Puppies obviously need more care and attention than an older dog.

By giving your child the responsibility of tending to the needs of their dog, they will develop a sense of accomplishment which will build confidence. They will see the result of negligence also when they don't take the dog out potty soon enough and there is an accident. The fact that the dog is dependent on them will give them a sense of self importance.

Your child will also see you give your dog discipline such as being put in time out for things like chewing on something important. In this way, they will see that they are not the only ones that are expected to behave. They will see that boundaries are placed for the dog as well. By seeing these things, your child will begin to see that good behavior is expected for everyone.

If they are the only child in the family, this will give them the assurance that you are a fair parent. Also, you will show them that good behavior is rewarded when you reward the dog for doing well as you reward your child for their good deeds.

Taking care of the dog will also teach them about the importance of consequences either good or bad. The consequence for chewing up the furniture results in disciplinary measures for the dog. The consequence for a good job like going to the door to let you know they have to go potty results in a treat.

Getting a dog or puppy is a good way to give your child some needed skills at handling responsibility. It also teaches them responsibility and how good decisions and behavior lead to good consequences and how bad behavior leads to negative consequences.
