If you want your guests to remember your wedding as the best they've ever been to, I recommend you hire a magician. Magic fills in all those awkward gaps in the proceedings and gets everyone involved and talking to each other.

The special, dream-like quality we all want for our wedding day is beautifully enhanced by magic and the sense of excitement and wonder it creates.

When we got married, my family and my husband's were not on the most cordial terms. I will always be grateful to the magician we booked for our wedding, who transformed a potentially stressful situation into a riotous party. As our jaws hit the floor, we forgot our differences.

My sister had a very romantic wedding and the magician blended perfectly with the mood. We'll never forget one trick in particular. Grace and her new husband each picked a card and signed it. The magician said the magic words and the two cards became one. They now have a card with two faces, one with her signature across it and the other with his. It lives in a double-sided photo frame, suspended from the ceiling in their bedroom.

Before we met, my husband went to a wedding where the only person he knew was the groom. All the other guests seemed to have been friends for years and Dan found it difficult to join in - until the magician appeared. When the magician had read Dan's mind and divined where he was planning to go on holiday that year, everybody wanted to ask Dan if he knew how it was done, and he was instantly part of the group.

When our friends Mark and Caroline got married, their photographer was obsessive-compulsive and spent 20 minutes arranging each shot. It took ages for them to arrive at the reception venue and they were worried the rest of us might have got restless. On the contrary! They had had the foresight to book a magician and we were having a great time. It was a small wedding and, when the bride and groom came in, we were virtually all gathered around, watching the magic with our mouths open.

The magician at our wedding also did a stint with the children, which they loved. He wasn't a children's entertainer as such but he was happy to show them some magic and it made an exciting change for them, between videos and party games.

When booking your magician, don't just go for the cheapest. You don't want to end up with someone's Uncle Derek who knows a few tricks. You want a smooth, sophisticated magician who will get on well with everybody and perform the sort of magic that will make people gasp, not groan. Although there are many capable magicians who are not in it, membership of The Magic Circle is a good indication of a magician's skill.
