Every website should be designed to achieve a basic goal. If you follow a few easy rules, you will increase the changes of achieving that goal.

1)Splash pages should not be used

Some website use a 'splash page' as an introduction to the main site. While the splash page may be very attractive, it wastes the readers time and they are likely to click the exit button immediately.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements. You will be wasting valuable website real estate and your visitor's time with unwanted banners. Instead, provide more relevant information and integrate your affiliate links into your content. Let your visitors feel they are making make the decision to buy instead of bombarding them with advertising.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

A simple, straightforward navigation menu system is essential. Avoid complicated flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don't know how to navigate your pages, they will leave your site.

4) Let your visitor know where they are

Put up some 'you are here' signs on your pages so the visitor does not get lost. If they get confused, the easiest way out may be the exit button and you want to make sure they don't press that too soon!

5) Use audio and video on your site carefully

Nothing causes a reader to leave a site more quickly that the unexpected blaring of their speakers when the site first loads. They may not appreciate the same music you do and will express their opinions by leaving immediately. If you use sound or videos, give the reader control over whether it plays or not and some way to adjust the volumne levels.
