There is myriad ways to make gold but the most common are making gold at the auction, gathering items which you can either sell at auction or vendors, making money from professions and by grinding.
Making gold from the auction house: for this you will need to use the search button and check the prices of items. Buy low and sell at the higher price is the key. It can become fairly time consuming to spend time in this way at the auction house and it is not uncommon for some players doing this more than anything else such is the time and dedication that you need to put into it. Nevertheless this can be made more comfortable by utilising the auctioneer add on to run down prices leaving you a good idea of what prices are like on your server and enable you to undercut other players so you can sell quicker. Or you can use it to find items that are greatly under priced so you can re-sell quickly at a profit. The best thing you can do is to always make your auction as short as possible, like two hours, at times when the servers are busy like in the evening when everyone is at home.
If you need to make money from professions, the two you should follow looking to take up are skinning and fishing. Skinning is great to take up especially as you level upwards and kill monsters that you can skin. Beside which they look to use the skin to make items they can then re-sell quickly at a major profit over what they pay for the skin so really this is a win win situation.
Fishing is likewise a great way to make gold in world of warcraft. Players on some servers can make up to 100 to 200 gold each hour. Remember that it's not just fish that you can catch, depending on your level of xp, but also blue and rare purples that command hundreds if not thousands of gold at the auction house.
Lastly if you do a lot of grinding you will gather a lot of money, items etc from mobs that you kill which tot up to a lot of gold over time. It is the most boring way to make gold in world of warcraft but the most sure. It is especially effective, though, if you know where to go and grind so that your rate of making gold is sky high enabling you to fill your sack not only with silver and gold coins but rare items that you can use to enhance your character and sell for top dollar at the auction house.
