To sell art one has to have a sense for the aesthetic and the ability to spot a work of art that has the potential to be sold and that might turn out to be a masterpiece. This ability gets honed by the passage of years as you gain experience. Selling art is tremendously competitive and one has to be persistent, committed and determined to make a name in the field. Just as the name of an artist can evoke certain reactions so should the name of the seller. He or she should establish a reputation for spotting good paintings or other works of art.

Other than the dealer side of it, an art competition is the most admirable way for an aspiring artist to get exposure for his art. A lot depends on the kind of competition that your painting is participating in. The more prestigious the competition the more the chances of your painting getting sold. Whether the painting that is exhibited wins a trophy or not, the possibility that it might get a favorable comment by the Judge of the competition is there and this possibility could make a sale. This first sale is a step in the right direction.

It is immaterial that the exhibit wins a prize or not. All the better if it did. This one small step could get his paintings more exposure and more entry into other competitions. The more the exposure the more the possibilities of making a sale. The process is somewhat linear. One sale leads to another and so on.

Previously only the rich bought their art from established galleries of repute. Here collections of the masters and some well known artists were kept on display and sold. People who have a taste for a beautiful picture attend competitions expecting to buy a painting or other work of art at a reasonable price. After all, art is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Thanks to the Internet, the mushrooming of online art galleries has been a boon to the budding artist. Though his wares cannot be easily displayed in big galleries, online galleries give him ample scope to do so. There are free online galleries and those that levy a small charge. The difference is almost marginal and both are equally good. Some galleries even take care of selling the exhibits on display and collect and give the artist the proceeding of the transaction after deducting a small percentage of the proceeds as service charges. A minor consideration in that the artist can concentrate on his work instead of having to go around hawking his wares.

Selling art is a lucrative business since in these days of a fluctuating money market, a painting is a sound investment that is bound to increase in value over a period of time. People also buy paintings of promising artist with the hope that they may become famous either in the near future or in a distant past and thus leave behind a legacy for their children or grandchildren. Some buy art as a status symbol.

If it so happens that you are not an artist and don't have the aptitude for being one, there is the off chance that someone well known to you might be one and you could convince him to let you sell them. From just selling your friend's art you might graduate to the status of a full fledged art dealer.

So sell art. Yours or someone else's. You might become famous or make someone else famous. If you do, then you could even become rich and buy a few masters for yourself.
