If you've had trouble attracting birds to your bird baths, try using bird bath fountains. The sound of moving water is likely to catch the attention of any bird searching for fresh water. You can use a fountain in almost any type of bird hath or pond. Using more than one type of bird bath will attract a larger variety of birds.
Many bird bath water fountains are attached directly to an outside water source such as a hose bib. The height of the fountain is controlled by using a flow restrictor. Birds that can be attracted include blue jays, mourning doves, robins, nuthatches and even wild turkeys.
An alternative to a bird bath fountain is a bird bath dripper. Water drippers are shaped like a shepherd's hook and often decorated with flowers. They can easily be attached to the side of your bird bath. Water drippers drip slowly into your bird bath at a specified rate.
A bird bath mister is great for attracting hummingbirds since they like to drink and bathe without landing. Misters spray a fine mist making it easy for birds to fly in and out for a fast drink or a cool bath. Misters can be used alongside a bird bath or you can install them in a small tree or shrub.
Using a water wiggler is an easy way to add movement to the water in your bird bath. It doesn't require any wiring or plumbing to install, just 2 "D" batteries are all you need. It creates ripples on the water surface stopping mosquitoes from laying their eggs while attracting birds with the sound of running water.
If you live in a cold climate, then bird bath fountains can help keep the water in your bird bath from freezing. If the temperatures go too low, you will have to supplement the moving water with a bird bath heater. Thawed water in the winter is very important in cold areas where most natural sources of water freeze over. Having open water in your bird bath will attract wild birds throughout the winter.
Whether you use bird bath fountains, water misters, water wigglers or bird bath drippers you will be happy with the variety of birds that are attracted to your yard. If you have a bird bath, investing in a way to create movement in the water will be worth the cost. The moving water will stop mosquitoes from breeding, while providing the calming sound of moving water.
