The key decision is selecting an orchid that is suitable for your area's climate and conditions. There are over 25,000 different types of orchids so you are probably best to use the wealth of information found on the internet to determine this.
Sunlight
A good idea is to put your orchid on a window sill that receives good sunlight both in the morning and afternoon. Move your orchid a little back away from the window's glass if the sunlight is very strong.
Fluorescent lightning is a good alternative if you live in area which doesn't receive much sun. When using any sort of lighting, make sure you keep the light on for a minimum of 12 hours.
How much water for your orchid?
Watering is the most important ingredient in growing orchids. To determine the correct amount you need to consider the particular species that you are growing but a good rule is to water the orchid only when the soil it is potted in is dry. Water requirements for different species can range from every five days to everyday, so check before you commence watering.
Temperature
Again, what temperature your orchid needs varies from species to species. Most commercially available orchids need temperatures in the 60 degrees F mark and harder to grow species require 70 degrees F or more. You orchid doesn't like the cold. Be sure to keep it warm during cold nights.
Humidity Levels for Orchids
Humidity is important for orchids. You can increase the humidity level by placing them on top of pebbles set down in a tray filled with water. Regularly spraying the orchids with distiled water from a spray bottle can also raise the humidity level.
