Though bonsai is a Japanese word meaning potted plant, its origin is not in Japan. The origin of containers with miniature trees can be traced to an ancient dynasty in China and the Japanese pronounced the Chinese term for the miniature style as bonsai. The bonsai trees can be seen across Japan, and they are always known as bonsai outside China.
Although in this country we often think of miniature trees as houseplants for indoors, in Japan they are also popular for use outdoors. In fact, some are specifically grown for use outdoors, so make sure to always follow the care instructions that come with your plant. A bonsai tree can be either a deciduous tree, which loses leaves in fall or winter, or it may be an evergreen.
The bonsai tree is a tiny size tree with leaves size smaller than normal, created by a combination of pruning, shaping, and root paring. A Bonsai can be from one inch to four feet tall depending on its type. Although tiny and medium size bonsai is more commonly created, you can order any size you want.
Bonsai trees take many years and plenty of care to create, which is one reason they make such special gifts. Growth is restricted by pruning as well as putting the tree in a small pot to limit its roots. There are special tools used for bonsai trees. It is a seasonal tree, so pruning and root cutting cannot be done when it is dormant.
When a bonsai tree is young, its wood is soft. It may be wired to maintain shape until its wood becomes firmer. Once the wood hardens, the shape is set and there is no longer a need for wiring. Because bonsai trees symbolize longevity and permanence, they make ideal wedding gifts. They also provide a thoughtful way to memorialize a lost loved one.
