Where as doctors and health care worker know the risks and understand what could cause high blood pressure there often are no symptoms prior to having a heart attack.
Accordingly knowing what could cause high blood pressure is often the best thing you can do. As the old saying goes "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", and knowing some of the known causes enables you to do something about it.
There is little doubt that salt intake has a direct effect on blood pressure. Both this and the ingestion of dietary potassium have been found to have adverse effects on a person's health.
Obesity is also major problem. Overweight people are more liable to have a higher blood pressure than their slim counterpart. The heart and other vital organs have to work harder which leads to added strain.
Drinking alcohol, in anything more than moderation, besides other health problems, can play a part in raising your blood pressure. More and more reports are telling us that drinking one glass of wine actually is beneficial in lowering your blood pressure, the "key" to those studies are "one glass", more than that does not help, in fact it hurts you.
Another possible cause is the "pill", the contraceptive pill. Women who take the pill have a greater risk of having high blood pressure. Having your blood pressure test every year, even twice a year, is highly recommended.
The birth control pill is not the only prescribed medication that affects your blood pressure. Many medications raise your blood pressure and there are some medication that actually lower your blood pressure, which can create problems too.
Having your blood pressure checked, at least annually, is certainly recommended. Especially if you have a family history of high blood pressure, have other health issues or have a lifestyle that may raise your risk of high blood pressure.
