Diamond cuts are not to be take lightly when shopping for jewelry. In fact, when it comes to choosing a diamond, the cut may be the most important decision you make.

The cut will give your diamond the ultimate shine and brilliance you expect from a spectacular diamond. The right cut will also help hide any flaws in the diamond, and maximize the color and clarity of the diamond.

Types of Diamond Cuts

Shallow, ideal and deep are the three types of diamond cuts. If a diamond is cut too shallow, it won't reflect much light, and therefore will have a duller appearance. The shallow cut is less-than-perfect if you're looking for a quality diamond cut.

Even though a deep cut diamond will appear larger than it actually is, it will also be dark and dull because the light does not reflect off the top of the diamond, but instead is lost from the sides of the diamond.

The ideal diamond cut is preferred. With an ideal cut, which is neither particularly deep nor particularly shallow, light reflects from the top of the diamond instead of getting lost off the sides of the diamond. This creates the dazzle and shine of quality diamonds. A diamond ideal cut is balanced, creating the right conditions for brilliance.

The Quality of the Diamond Cut

The ideal cut allows light to bounce off the top of the diamond at just the right angle to create a dazzling, brilliant effect. When the light bounces off the sides or the bottom of the diamond, the effect is a dull, lack-luster diamond that lacks color and clarity. The all-important diamond cut also determines the overall grade of the diamond.

The width and depth of the diamond cut will determine how effective the cut is. In turn, the cut of the stone will decide the grade of the diamond and will enhance or hinder the color and clarity as well. Today, serious jewelers use computer programs to map out the diamond cuts that will provide the best light reflection and create brilliant diamonds.
