Not long ago my wife insisted that we go to the car dealership immediately. I was reluctant because we had another 5 months before our lease expired. She explained that she received a mailer that said that if we came into the store that week they would pay off our current lease and put us into a brand new car lease. The sales agent promised she could get us a comparable new vehicle for the same price we were currently paying. So off we went to the car dealership.

What happened here? This business did an excellent job marketing and creating a sense of urgency. Not only did they announce a sale, but they did something that we can mimic to add more customers to our businesses. They put a time limit on the sale. This creates a sense of scarcity. The customer who was on the fence is all of a sudden motivated to do business.

The most profitable businesses in this nation utilize this technique. Sometimes you don't have to recreate the wheel. Simply customize this technique to fit your business. A long time ago grocery stores would send out coupons to prospective customers advertising their best deals. They learned that the coupons that had an expiration date on them consistently out preformed the regular coupons. Why did this consistently occur? People thought that they were going to lose out on a potential deal.

The thought of losing out on a great offer motivates customers to action. If you construct your offers this way you are likely to have more customers ready to do business with you. By utilizing this technique you increase the demand for your product or services. You customers naturally see your offer as being more valuable. Isn't that great?

I challenge you to put this method to the test. Run a promotion offering 35% off a current product or service you have. But don't stop there. Tell your prospective customers that in order to lock in the savings they have to purchase it within the next 5 days. Each day send a reminder regarding the fast approaching deadline. On the last day of the promotion you will be amazed at how many people make purchases. They simply don't want to lose out on such a great deal.

Some of you may be concerned that by lowering your price during the promotion that you will have less profit. This is a valid concern. However, you must understand that once customers have a positive experience with you once, they are far more likely to do business with you in the future. If you have satisfied customers you will have repeat customers.
