Internet Business - Marketing
Written by Lisa Munoz

If you have a website, do you know how effective it is? If you don't have a website and you're thinking of trying one for your business, do you know the difference between an effective website and one that is a waste of money? The questions that follow will help you plan for the success of your website, regardless of if you're redesigning a website or if you're brand new to this online business marketplace.

-What is the goal of your website? Is it to generate sales, educate consumers, gather leads, or something entirely different? Your website design is completely dependent on your online marketing goals.

- Does your website have a specific demographic or group of people in mind? As you make your website, all of your content, pictures, even the specific words you choose will need to be targeted towards your audience. A website for doctors will be different from a website for patients.

- How do you want people to navigate through your site? This ties in directly to a different question. If you have a clear goal, getting the customer to that goal should be clear and simple. Easy and simple navigation is much better than fancy animated redirects.

- Have you encouraged your website visitors to take action? Nearly all websites, in order to be profitable, will need the website visitor to take action. Your site's call to action should be simple, clear, and easy to accomplish. Words like "Click here to purchase" or "Sign up for our newsletter" should be clearly visible and the task easily accomplished.

- How will you gauge the effectiveness of your website? Are you trying to generate large numbers of visitors? Do you want people to sign up? Do you want people to purchase items from your store? Do you want people to come to a physical location? Whatever your goal, you need some way of measuring it. Otherwise, how will you know what works and what doesn't?

Even if you are hiring a professional website designer to make your website for you, you will still need clear answers to each of these questions in order to have the most effective website possible. The more clear you are in your pre-website planning, the more likely it is your website will help you be successful.
