There are many kinds of sales job, which differ by company, product, field or industry. Although sales work varies from industry to industry, in its most basic sense, a sales position involves persuading prospective customers to buy your product or service.

The individual involved in this kind of work is called a sales agent. More specific variations of the job are business managers, sales managers and transaction brokers. These are the people that companies depend on to bring them profits. They close the deal and sell the product for the company.

Being a sales agent can be very rewarding. Besides the basic salary, these people are in a position to receive incentives or commissions as long as they reach or surpass their quota. Many companies offer a financial reward to commend their employees of a job well done. Instead of cash, other companies give away a free vacation trip or a new car.

There are many ways to close out a sale. Each company teach a different sales techniques from one another, while independent sales agents use a method that they are most comfortable with. Some of the popular ways of selling a product is going door-to-door, telemarketing and bidding.

The first technique is very common, but very difficult and time consuming as well. It requires the agent to knock on each home and persuade each homeowner to buy a product.

Telemarketing involves burning the phone lines to get a customer. A telemarketer serenades a potential client to buy a product. Usually, telemarketers have a sales speech or sales spiel that directs them on how to answer a customer's questions.

The final technique is a request for proposal or bidding. Here, a company that wants a project done invites other companies to bid for its offer. In this auction, the lowest bidder wins.
