We spend almost all our time sitting down. Just think about it - during meals, we sit down, when at work, we sit down, when going to and from work, we sit down, even when we are at home, we sit down in front of the TV to wind down after work. We really do sit our way through daily life.

We spend almost all our time sitting down. Just think about it - during meals, we sit down, when at work, we sit down, when going to and from work, we sit down, even when we are at home, we sit down in front of the TV to wind down after work. We really do sit our way through daily life.

Well, there are big problems with that. Sure, it takes a lot of weight off our feet, but remember that our abdominal and back muscles tend to compensate for the lack of support our bodies are getting. Bad sitting posture can lead to several serious health problems in addition to the usual backaches and stiff necks.

How?

Basically, sitting the wrong way (leaning too far forward or back) causes our abdominal and back muscles to tense and become inactive. when this happens, our body becomes imbalanced because these muscles are the ones that keep our body in balance. Weak muscles in these areas may lead to several serious health concerns.

When these muscles do not work properly as they're supposed to, other muscles in the body has no choice but to take over. The muscles that usually take over are the ones used for breathing - the diaphragm muslces - which results to poor breathing. This makes our bodies lacking in oxygen.

Worse, poor sitting posture also causes the neck muscles to stiffen up - and with them, connected muscles (such as the jaw and throat muscles) also get stiff. This leads to tension and blockages in the veins that bring oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

If you are already familiar with my blog, you know the effects of having insufficient oxygen.

Fibromyalgia, which up to now does not have a known cause or cure for, is basically caused by lack of oxygen flowing in the muscles.

Headaches and migraines are also caused by insufficient oxygen in the tissues and muscles around the head.

When the neck is tensed, the brain becomes starved for oxygen, and often supports your head in a slightly askew way. This, I've discovered, is why we suffer from vertigo and dizziness - it basically comes from the compromised balance system between our eyes and ears.

Hypertension, TMJ, snoring, sleep apnes, obesity...and many more. Usually, one of these illnesses are causing many of the others, continuing a vicious cycle.

And all because of poor sitting posture!

All these illnesses can be prevented by sitting the right way. Many of my programs give suggestions on improving your health through simple exercises. These exercises put the body back in balance, making up for the countless times you sat the wrong way all these years.
