The Chinese believe that acne is caused by heat and toxins that are disbursed through our blood. There are others who think that it is the result of the poisons that invade our body when we suffer from poor digestion. There are many theories, but most assert that there are nontraditional treatment options that can cure and even prevent acne.

Diet and hygiene play a big role in alternative acne treatments and it is important to consume a low fat, vitamin-rich diet while keeping the skin clean. Saturated fat can cause tissue damage that leads to inflammation, which is why it is important to limit fats in the diet. It is also believed that foods such as coffee, garlic and other spicy ingredients should be avoided as they may cause the body to build up heat.

Vitamin A helps maintain healthy skin, so it is vital to include a sufficient quantity in the diet. Zinc should also be included as it helps transport nutrients to the cells. In girls and women, menstruation sometimes causes acne to flare up. If that is the case, Vitamin B-6 can assist in regulating hormone production. Maintenance of daily bowel movements can be facilitated by eating a high fiber diet. In addition, acidophilus capsules may improve digestion.

There are several alternate treatments available for acne that are designed to be put directly on the skin. Some of these treatments call for a honey facial, which will cause your skin to be revitalized. To indulge in one of these facials, apply raw honey to your face and leave it on between five and ten minutes.

Tea tree oil can also be applied to the skin. It is believed that this acts to discourage bacteria growth on the skin.

Another method to treat acne and pimples is to use exfoliants. Alpha-hydroxyl acids, glycolic and lactic acids, which are found in citrus fruits, are believed to keep dead skin cells from building up. For example, lemon juice mixed with water can be applied to the face, allowed to dry for about ten minutes and then rinsed off. Those with sensitive skin may add more water to the mixture to reduce the "burning sensation".

Herbalist will sometimes concoct their own alternative pimple treatment. One suggestion is evening primrose oil, or black current seed oil capsules. On the other hand, some recommend using Echinacea or Goldenseal teas.

Exercise and relaxation play an important role in controlling acne. Keeping fit is crucial to the proper functioning of the body. Doctors may dispute the efficacy of some alternative acne treatments, but the success of these treatments is greatly affected by the person and the severity of their acne.
