Each year we see more and more skin care products being released. More often than not it is claimed that the product uses the latest technologies and ingredients. The flashy adverts announcing the new product rarely tell you that it actually costs more than the product it is replacing. Many new skin care creams are said to offer 'microdermabrasion'.

Microdermabrasion is a popular skin care treatment that is known to be great for removing wrinkles and scars. Clinical test have shown that it can remove fine lines and help in the cure of acne. The process works by the use of a machine which blasts crystals down a tube onto the skin. These, very fine, crystals are highly abrasive and remove the very top layer of skin revealing the newer skin below.

As microdermabrasion is one of the most popular skin care treatment it can be found in most spas and clinics. Only a few years ago it was relatively unknown in the USA but now it can be seen almost everywhere. Even skin care creams are said to be 'microdermabrasion' but in reality they often offer little more than very strong exfoliation of the skin.

Today competition in business is often ruthless and this is certainly true when it comes to microdermabrasion as every spa, clinic or salon seems to offer it and they all want you as a customer. Most places have informative web sites showing what services and treatments they offer. As with many businesses it is known that some clinics have exaggerated their success rate to gain customers.

Most web sites show photographs of their products and in skin care most show before and after photographs to show improvements. When viewing such images it is important to study them closely as they have, sometimes, been manipulated to show increased benefits. The most common trick is to use slightly different lighting and make-up which enhances the look of the person in the after photograph. Ideally the conditions must be the same in both images to give a true picture of the result. A popular trick in microdermabrasion photographs is to have the model screw her face up for the before shot and then stretch the face for the after shot thus showing less wrinkles etc. Sometimes such instances may be purely by accident but you need to be aware.

Obviously you are not going to base your opinions purely upon the clinic's web site and their photographs of before and after microdermabrasion. You will also need to make a few enquiries about real life experience. This can be done by asking the establishment for personal testimonials but better still ask your family and friends. It is likely that, if they haven't used their services themselves, they will know somebody who has.

As you have most probably noticed health professionals often display their certificates proudly. They should be relatively easy for you to take a closer look (checking if they are legitimate and relevant). This is pretty important as microdermabrasion is described as a cosmetic procedure (although non invasive). All cosmetic surgeons, aesthetic technicians or anyone who operates a microdermabrasion machine should be suitably trained in its safe use.

The great news is virtually all clinics, spas and salons which offer microdermabrasion are highly professional and employ only suitably trained and incredibly experienced individuals. Most go to extreme lengths to ensure that their clients get the best possible service. Furthermore they are often acutely aware of the importance of a good reputation. The first part of a treatment is the consultation. During the consultation you will have your skin examined closely so that a bd after treatment can be decided upon. At this time it should be explained to you what would be considered reasonable expectations for your type of skin. When you and your consultant are happy and you understand what to expect and what to do (after treatment) you can go ahead with your first session of microdermabrasion.
