There are many ways a person decides to get a tattoo. It could be seeing a great tattoo on a friend or visiting a tattoo parlor and getting inspired or just wanting to look cool. Hopefully it isn't because you lost a bet during a night of drinking too much and you go about this process in rational way. A tattoo is a permanent change to your look so you not only want to pick a design you will love for life but to pick a tattoo salon and artist that you feel confident in as you start this process. So to get to that place that you are ready to take this big step, it's good to ask the right questions.

The perfect situation would be to find a reputable tattoo business that is in the business for the long haul in your community if you can. A business that makes tattooing their profession will make an effort to run a professional operation that places a priority on doing clean tattoos that are safe for their customers. This type of professional operation wants you to have a great experience and wants to avoid any chance of infection or medical problems with your tattoo so they will make the effort to make sure that happens. You can take the initiative to make sure the business is run in a professional manner, that it has a good reputation and has been around a few years and that former customers are happy too.
Once you have established that the tattoo parlor is one that you can trust, the next thing is to pick your tattooist. You might find a parlor that will have a policy that you take the next tattooist that is up and have to let it go at that. This is a parlor to avoid. Letting someone put an image on your skin is a very personal thing to do. You want to know a little about this tattoo artist before you let them start working on your tat.
There are a number of questions to ask each tattooist you are considering for the job. For one thing, you don't want this tattooist to be a rookie. You want someone who has been doing this a while and has some training. What is his or her background and "resume" and what kind of references can the tattooist provide? It's important that when you expose the area of skin you want decorated to a tattooist for a permanent tattoo, you must feel at ease that this artist is the best in the business.
In addition to know who is going to perform this tattoo, its good to understand the process from beginning to end and even after you walk out of the tattoo parlor with your tat in place. Find out in advance if there is service after the money is paid and that the parlor and the artist support you as you get used to the tattoo. Perhaps the tattoo will need some additional refinement or some repair if the healing process takes a toll on it. The tattooist should provide that service. But make sure you know that before you pay your money and get the tattoo because after the fact is too late.
Never be afraid to talk money with the tattoo salon and to get details of their charges. If they do not have their fees clearly defined well before you ask the question, its time to find an established business that knows what they charge. In fact, the costs should be clearly documented for you so you understand everything you are paying for. If your tattooist charges more than others in the same shop, find out why. And make sure you know in detail why some tattoo patterns are more expensive than others because you might be able to find one that is perfect for you that is not the most expensive ones they offer. The tattoo parlor should work with you to keep the costs in line and if they try to pitch tattoos that are not in your price range, know where the door is and use it.
But maybe the most important questions have to do with cleanliness and health. If possible, see if they will let you witness a tattoo being applied. That way not only will you know more about what will be happening to you, you will understand the way the tattooist keeps the process clean. Know in advance what the aftercare issues will be that you will be responsible for to make sure the tattoo heals well and understand all that you are getting into before they start putting the pattern on your skin.
You want your tattooist to be some you feel you can trust. While the relationship you have with the tattoo artist is short, he should be open to answer all the questions you have. If they are operating an honest business, they should be willing to listen to as many questions as you have until you are happy with going forward with the tattoo. If you have fears or worries about the process, the tattooist should be good at reassuring you and building your confidence. So if you find a tattoo artist that not only passes all your reviews of his skills, his professionalism and his experience and can build confidence in you that this is going to be a great experience, then you have found your tattooist for this tattoo and for possibly many more in the future.
