Heritage music -- the melodic sounds of bluegrass, gospel, folk, country, Celtic, and Appalachian instruments and song - has been passed down through our American generations and is experiencing a resurgence in popularity across the United States. Often, along with the festivals and concerts, you'll find breathtaking natural scenery, traditional crafts and artisans, wonderful restaurants featuring local specialties, and of course, the perfect bed and breakfast nearby. Here are some suggestions for your musical interlude.

Often, along with the festivals and concerts, you'll find breathtaking natural scenery, traditional crafts and artisans, wonderful restaurants featuring local specialties, and of course, the perfect bed and breakfast nearby. Here are some suggestions for your musical interlude.

West Virginia's Country Roads Offer Trip Back in Time

A wise songwriter once extolled West Virginia as, "almost Heaven." A trip to idyllic Shepherdstown and the Thomas Shepherd Inn offers the history and ambiance bed and breakfast travelers crave. Music lovers need walk no further than O'Hare's General Store to watch local musicians celebrate their heritage of dulcimer music. Concerts and theater are available throughout the year, and don't forget to pack your dancing shoes. The Shepherdstown Music and Dance is famous for its contra and Morris dancing events.

Musical Traditions near the Biltmore in North Carolina

Not only is the 1900 Inn on Montford a short drive from the famed Biltmore Estate, the historic inn was designed by one of the Biltmore's head architects. The decor and design aren't the only fun for history buffs. Twice each week, guests can relax on the front porch and the sounds of banjos and harmonicas as local musicians immerse the crowd in a concert of local heritage music. Add to that the convenient distance to the myriad attractions of Asheville, and you can hardly find a better vantage point from which to enjoy your trip to North Carolina and the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains.

Enjoy Heritage Music in the Great Smoky Mountains

The country lodge of Hilton's Bluff Inn sits in the wooded foothills of the Smokies near Pigeon Forge, TN. Heritage music and theater is just a few minutes away at the Smith Family Theater, where the trio delivers a rousing show of country, bluegrass, gospel and oldies rock'n'roll, with some comedy impressions thrown in for good measure. Dollywood is located closeby, featuring shows and heritage crafts. Guests at the Inn can enjoy the tranquil setting of the mountains while relaxing by the stone fireplace or lounging on their deck or porch.

Festival Showcases Appalachian Musical Heritage

Guests at The Ponderosa Lodge are just a few miles from a myriad of mountain music and local crafts. The Tamarack Arts Center offers live music at its Governor Hulett C. Smith Theater as well as music festivals, workshops and plenty of unique shopping. The Lodge also is near to Camp Washington-Carver, home to the famous Appalachian String Band Festival, one of the largest heritage music venues in the country. Back at the inn, you'll find gleaming wood floors topped with braided rugs, quilt-topped beds, scenic grounds with walking trails and nights filled with starry skies.

Musical Theater Carries on North Texas Traditions

Guests at the American Heritage House Bed & Breakfast can enjoy a variety of music and theater which carry on the heritage musical traditions. Granbury Live has 'Branson-style' music shows and the Brazos River Music Fest offers bluegrass and country music in the spring. Newly built in the Federal style and furnished with elegant antiques, this B&B offers true Southern hospitality and charm - and a gourmet multi-course breakfast - to make you feel welcome in this popular destination area.
