Instead of whining about the situation, you can turn it to your advantage to get a discounted airfare. The way to go is thus- one day before your departure, phone the travel agent or airline and ask about the flight, this will show you its booking status- whether it's overbooked or not overbooked.
If your flight is overbooked, then you must swing fast into action and ensure you get to the airport well ahead of time in order to be at the head of the line!
It's time to act- you should volunteer to be bumped when asked by the airline (they are obligated legally to do this) but only after getting a concession in the form of a discounted airfare. After you get the concession, swing fast into action by invoking rule number 240 immediately; this states that irrespective of the airline concerned, you must be on board the next available flight.
An alternative method to get cheap airfare is by frequent browsing of the special offers area on the websites of airlines prior to booking flights; the chances of finding attractive discounted airfare here is very high.
A third strategy you can use to get cheap airfare and turn an otherwise costly fare into a cheap one is by selecting various major airports that are close to your destination. One good example is to go for New York's JFK airport if you are dropping off finally in Montreal; even though the two cities are separated by a couple of hours drive, the money you will save is worth the trouble.
