Of all the wonderful places to stay in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland it is to Stornoway that most people head when taking a vacation or visiting on business. Many visitors choose to stay in Stornoway guest house accommodation rather than in hotels or self catering. The Outer Hebrides/ Western Isles are a rather unique set of islands off the west of Scotland with the Isle of Lewis (where you will find Stornoway) being the largest of them all.

While most of the Isle of Lewis is little more that rather barren looking moorland the most incredible scenery can be found along the west coast of the island. At the very south west of the island are some of the most amazing beaches to be found in the whole of the UK, and possibly Europe. More often than not the wonderful stretches of silvery golden shell sand beaches are deserted except for sheep and other, more interesting, wildlife, So, if your chosen Stornoway guest house is right in the center of town you can easily escape to your own, almost private, paradise beach, whenever the mood takes you.

At the start of the twentieth century Stornoway appeared to have a bright future ahead. There had been much investment in the town, which had a number of fine buildings including several large banks, and business was booming. However the local economy was dependant upon the herring fishing and, with Stornoway being one of the largest herring fishing ports in Europe, most other businesses where ancillary to the fishing industry. Sadly the herring industry fell into extreme decline following World War One and the town faced hardship. Today the harbor still has an active fishing fleet which helps to create a most wonderful atmosphere, especially when the boats are landing their catch.

Over on the other side of the harbor can be seen the wonderful Lews Castle. The castle grounds are a most relaxing visit and well worth taking time out for. The castle grounds are rather extensive and are heavily wooded but following one of the walks you will discover various places of interest including the relatively new Woodland Centre.

When visiting the Isle of Lewis you really have two choices to make about the accommodation in which you shall stay. Do you stay in a Stornoway guest house, hotel or other accommodation or do you, instead, opt to stay in accommodation outside the town in an altogether more rural setting. Much depends on your preferences, do you prefer to be close to amenities or is peace and quiet the most important factor to you? With this in mind we shall look at one, highly popular Stornoway guest house and another popular guest house just outside the town.

Within just a few minutes drive of the center of Stornoway can be found the Holm View Guest House. Sat within the wonderful Isle of Lewis countryside Holm View has some amazing views (hence the name), especially out to sea. Of course being out in the countryside means you are away from the crowds and the light pollution so you can thoroughly enjoy the most gorgeous sunset and clear star lit skies. Holm View has some of the most comfortable accommodation offered by Lewis guest houses.

The Thorlee is to be found right in the very middle of the town of Stornoway. Within easy reach of all of the town's many amenities and excellent transport links the Thorlee is best suited to those who prefer to be at the very heart of a town. Staying in the Thorlee means that all the pubs and restaurants are within walking distance allowing you to thoroughly enjoy Stornoway's night life.

If you choose to stay in a Stornoway guest house, or you stay bed and breakfast in a local hotel or in a rural area, you will experience some of the friendliest, and warmest receptions. The Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland are famed for their hospitality which is always first class. It is so great that you will, sometime soon, be planning a further vacation in the Hebrides.
